Conurbation In Ecuador

Back To Projects

Challenge: Protecting biodiversity while increasing value to local people dependent on the ecosystem and potential global partners.

Solution:  Link the formal and informal economy in Quito by publicizing targeted areas of the quebradas and incentivizing edges between patches of agricultural land.  The plan reduces rampant deforestation and depletion of the fragile ecosystem which endangers species and contributes to climate change.
Building on the network of universities and avenues for international trade, a grassroots system of research and exchange of knowledge on the bio-diverse ecology readily available may initiate a change in the structure of exports for the country.  Assigning an economic value to efforts in this new knowledge community can contribute to conservation, sustainable development and a fair use of resources.

Research performed while attending Columbia University Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design program with Jessica Reyes and Kathy Vilnrotter.
